The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is only a minor upgrade over its predecessor but it has an added digital rotating dial, larger version display, passive ECG, and LTE options. It is slightly more expensive, for just a few extra features. Active 2’s extra features are the only literal reasons for the higher cost.
The refined version of Samsung’s sporty smartwatch went on for sale in September (2019) that comes with a digital bezel and a few other tricks which make it the best wearable in the company’s lineup.
The Active 2 retains its predecessor’s slimmer, minimal, modern look and not having an overly masculine look which makes the watch more broadly appealing.
It is available in two size variants, the 40mm variant and 44mm variant which is more manageable than the bigger model from its predecessor.
The pretty light just starting at 38g for the smaller aluminum and 42g for the larger one (with the strap). It has an aluminum body and comes in cloud silver, aqua black and pink gold colors. You can also get it in stainless steel for a higher price tag, which comes in silver, black and gold color variants.
The cheaper model comes with a rubberized Fluro-elastomer band and if you want a classier look, you can opt for the heavier stainless-steel body with a leather strap.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 has a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED screen 360 x 360 resolution. The pixel density of the screen is about 364ppi. It has less bezels around the front glass this time around. The front display glass is protected with a Corning Gorilla Glass DX+.
It has a new and refreshed dial and is worth trying out for ease of use. The dial keeps the fingers on the outer edge of the screen and out of the way. It’s a nice touch-based alternative method of quick navigations and notification toggles.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 has an Exynos 9110 dual-core chipset at 1.15Ghz processing speed which is fast enough. It has two RAM variants which are the 768 MB RAM variant and an upgraded 1.5GB for the LTE model. It has 4GB of storage in with no external storage availability.
The Active 2 runs on Samsung’s One UI overlay over The Tizen 4.9 operating system similar to the original one. It is compatible with android versions 5.0 and above and iOS. The rotating dial makes it easier to sift through apps on the home page or notifications but it will take getting used to for navigation precision.
Tizen hasn’t really focused on the third-party app support since the original Active. Apps like calorie counters and run-mapping rely on first-party apps to carry most of the interactivity. Tizen is still behind Apple Watch OS in this regard.
Active 2 does offer a loudspeaker which sensors such as Accelerometer, gyro, heart rate and barometer which can be activated through natural language commands (voice control).
Other features include workout tracker, health support, heart rate tracking with a real-time advice feature.
An eSIM card slot is available for network access and other network connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC. The Samsung Pay app is also available.
The watch is also IP68 water-resistant up to 50 m. It has a touch-sensitive bezel like discussed earlier. It is also compatible with standard 20 mm straps.
It has a non-removable Li-Ion 340 mAh battery with wireless charging features which can be charged through any Qi charger. When using all of the features available, the battery might not last as long since it has a Super AMOLED display but it will easily manage to get you through the week.
Pros and Cons
|Digital haptic dial control is great||Price raised|
|Still decent 2-day battery life||Still very few third-party applications|
|Attractive minimal design|
The price of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is currently at Rs. 25,990 in India. In Nepal, it cost around Rs. 38, 999. Overall, this is one of the best smartwatches in the market and one of the finest Samsung can offer regarding the build, design and compatibility. It is definitely not a cheap smartwatch but is also not overpriced, the quality of the watch and its features make it worth the price.
