JBL has successful managed to enter into the market of the portable speaker with a diverse range of products categorizing to different budgets. The JBL Flip series of Bluetooth speakers are quite popular. The JBL Flip 4 is a robust, affordable Bluetooth speaker that offers complete waterproofing. So, it can be submerged in water unlike its predecessor which could only handle splashes. There is also a new shortcut which lets you access Siri or Google Assistant with a single button press.
The Flip 4 has the same cylindrical design as its predecessors, and is available in multiple colors. The durable fabric material lets the sounds flow while keeping dirt and debris out. While the sizeable rubber end caps and body-hugging accents mean it can be comfortably chucked in your bag or mistreated at the beach without fear of damage. Large play/pause, volume up and down, and sync button act as the on-device controls. It is easy to grip with one hand and isn’t too heavy either. The JBL Flip 4 is designed to be used in a horizontal position as there are passive radiators on either end. The buttons have a nice clicky feel but they aren’t illuminated. Even though the design is cylindrical, the Flip 4 doesn’t roll around, as the silicone strip bulges out a bit that provides speaker a nice base to rest on. At the back, it has a backlit power button, five LED dots to indicate the battery level.
The Bluetooth version has been upgraded to 4.2 but it still has two 40mm full-range drivers that deliver a total power output of 16W. It supports a frequency response of 70Hz to 20,000Hz, and Bluetooth profiles including A2DP V1.3, AVRCP V1.6, HFP V1.6 and HSP V1.2. The JBL connect app lets you sync multiple Flip 4s in party mode or use two units in a stereo configuration. The app also shows the battery level of the speaker and lets to change its name. Besides this, the app can be used to change the Play button’s functionality to either play/pause or call up the Siri or Google Assistant on your device.
Audio performance is pretty impressive regardless the size of the speaker. Bass is punchy and can be felt even at moderate volume levels. There’s no unwanted clipping or distortion when the volume is cranked. It has a 3000mAh battery which is good for a rated 12 hours of continuous playback. When it’s really low, the last dot flashes red. The dots only light up when you press any of the buttons. The speaker charges pretty quickly with a 10W (5V, 2A) power adapter.
