This time we have GoPro Fusion which is the most anticipated 360 camera ever. GoPro may have started the action camera market, but the Fusion is different from all the GoPros that came before it. It is a true 360 camera, it uses two ultra-wide angle lenses to capture a full 360 spherical image of everything around it, instead of using a single forward-facing lens.
The GoPro Fusion has been designed first and foremost as an action camera, for the starter, it’s waterproof to five meters so that you can take it onto the water. The body is coated with thick rubber, which makes easy to grip so there is less chance of you dropping it. It’s built for the outdoors, but the 73 x 75x 23mm Fusion does weigh 226g with its 2,620mAh lithium-ion battery in place. Its square shape also isn’t as easy to slip into a pocket like some other 360° cameras.
The Fusion seems to be pretty big for a 360 camera, but still smaller than a DSLR. It is very comfortable to hold it in one hand and it’s not heavy. It has a few manual controls and an LCD display screen. It is pretty easy to use and is quite easy much easy to control every function and change every setting. You can completely control the Fusion manually without having to control to connect to an app.
The Fusion comes with a slot either side of the battery for inserting microSD cards, one for each lens. If you are hoping to use your Fusion with your existing tripod then you will probably need to buy an adapter, as it does not come with a standard tripod mount. When it comes to operating the Fusion, it’s all about simplicity; there are only two buttons, the power button, and the shutter button. There’s also a tiny LCD screen, whose menus can be scrolled through using those two buttons.
The best thing about GoPro itself is that they are made for video and when it comes to GoPro Fusion almost certainly shoots the best 360 videos . It is able to shoot excellent quality 360 videos because it uses more advanced optics (lenses) than its competitors. This, coupled with the high 5K resolution, results in detailed video with accurate colors and a high dynamic range. A common complaint surrounding 360 video is that it doesn’t look high definition, due to the fact that the pixels are spread around 360 degrees instead of 90 degrees like a flat video.
The Fusion has multiple microphones built into its body, allowing it to shoot 360 ambisonic audio. Ambisonic audio is really a must have feature for 360 cameras, as it allows the sound to match the immersive nature of the video. With ambisonics you’ll hear sounds coming from the direction in which they were made, making for a much more immersive experience that 360 videos are supposed to provide.
The Fusion can shoot 18 mega-pixel photos, which is pretty good. The lower than ideal resolution is made up for by the excellent lenses which produce detailed and colorful images. On a mobile device, the images look very good as the resolution doesn’t really factor in, but when viewed on larger screens you may notice some blurring around the edges.
The Fusion can shoot in RAW which opens up a lot of editing and color correction options and with the time you could create some stunning photos with awesome dynamic range. I still wouldn’t recommend the Fusion for professional 360 photography as it lacks some must have features such as bracketing and a TIMER.
Although GoPro’s first foray into the 360 camera space, the Fusion gets a lot of things right and performs well. The things it doesn’t do well could, for the most part, be remedied by firmware and software updates
