The first Echo Plus was launched back in 2017 which brought a more premium smart speaker to the line-up of Amazon Echo products. And now with an upgrade with a year, Amazon’s 2nd generation Echo Plus is back with an overhauled design and a number of notable improvements under the hood as well.
It has a neater design, a more useful smart hub and improved audio all make this the more premium Echo device that the original Plus failed to be. The 1st gen Echo Plus was taller, thinner, ganglier version of the original Echo. Now though, visually it has a lot more in common with the standard Amazon Echo, featuring an attractive mesh fabric mesh that will probably look more at home in, well, your home.
Now considerably it has become shorter, and slightly fatter, with dimensions of 148 x99 x99mm compared to the previous 235 x 84 x 84 mm. There are other slight changes, the Amazon logo has moved from the main body to the underside of the speaker, while the ‘mute’ button has ditched its microphone symbol for a less evocative crossed circle. The upper and bottom rims also curve into the body of the speaker, rather than having a sharp drop. Overall, it is a good-looking device and a significant upgrade from its predecessor.
The Amazon Echo Plus (2018) is predictably talented at picking out voices from noisy environments and has the same smart capability to play music and podcasts. It also connects to other smart home devices, and tell you about the day’s weather, traffic, news, and various trivia. One of the additional strengths of the Alexa ecosystem is that all Alexa-enabled devices benefit from the continual improvement of its software.
The additional point for the Amazon Echo Plus is due its improved audio credentials over the rest of the Echo range It still has more of a kick to the bass, even if the downward-firing woofer can feel a bit tacked on, with the lack of a mid-range speaker making the gap between the high and low frequencies a bit too apparent.
The Echo Plus is a great smart-home hub and a great smart speaker — but it’s still not yet the best in either category. Thus, if you’re looking to start up your smart home, or want an Alexa speaker with better audio than the other Echos can provide it too, the Echo Plus is well worth the price tag.
Amazon Echo Plus (2nd Gen) amount to Rs 25,500 in Nepal.
